Why We Exist
Oftentimes ministries are created due to past experiences and/or hurt. Unlocked Closet is no different. Our founders started the process to become foster parents and within a day of receiving their license, a phone call was received telling them there was a newborn baby that needed a home. They did not have children, so they had nothing - no crib, no bed, no clothing, no toys. Absolutely nothing. After scrambling to purchase a few onesies, bottles, diapers, and blankets, they were able to borrow a few items from friends. Part of their support system tried to throw them a baby shower in order to obtain the remaining items needed, but no one RSVP'd and the shower was canceled. What they thought was a large support system quickly seemed to crumble.
This is why Unlocked Closet began. Unlocked has a heart to rally around the child and the family, to support them in ways that others may not initially understand. We are here to provide material items such as clothing, diapers, toys, etc, but also to be a listening and understanding ear. Foster care and adoption are difficult journeys to navigate and the support systems that surround families don't always initially understand. Unlocked Closet is here to fill that gap while their support system grows to understand, learn, and love in new ways, while remaining a resource to the family.
Mission
Unlocked Closet is a nonprofit organization actively serving and supporting local foster and adoptive families. Our goal is to surround these children and families with love and share their burdens by providing free clothing, furniture, toiletries, and more. It is our hope to create, strengthen, and maintain a positive local foster/adoptive community.
Vision
Our desire is to empower foster and adopted children by providing, free of charge, items that they may call their own. In the future, we would like to expand upon this through scholarships for lessons, camps, colleges, and more. This is our way of building self-esteem and value within the foster and adoptive community, especially within the children. At Unlocked Closet, we hope to promote emotional healing and unlock the door to positive outcomes.
